The challenge

How do you lower the barrier to join a local sports club for people with a disability?

With Uniek Sporten Thuis as a starting point, a workout platform specifically for people with disabilities, we guide participants throughout their entire journey. From the very first wheelchair handball, sitting volleyball or intellectual disability korfball workout at home, to finding and joining a local team.

Our approach

We designed this journey with smart, data-driven email flows. If you finish a wheelchair handball workout successfully, you will receive a personalised flow from your handball coach. Step by step, your coach will guide you towards finding a local club:

  • Every email comes from a personal coach.
  • All communication is tailored to the athlete’s favorite sport and disability
  • A club search tool helps athletes find the right team nearby.
  • Taking long to contact a club? We follow up with extra information and inspiring content.
  • Joined a club? We stop the flow to avoid irrelevant communication.
  • No conversion? We invite individuals to share their biggest challenges.

Email communication and support tools are tailored to the athlete's favorite sport and disability to maximise conversion at each stage of the journey.

Unique sports profiles

Based on first-party data, we gradually build complete sports profiles for every individual. Data is collected through email interactions and web-based interactions that are captured through Blueconic. The characteristics captured include:

  • Your favorite sport
  • Your personal coach and disability type
  • Personal challenges and barriers
  • Motivation and needs such as adaptive sports equipment
  • Stage in the journey towards finding a club

This approach makes personal guidance easier while reducing workload for support teams. Every athlete feels supported based on their own unique intersts and conversions help predict the next best step.

For Uniek Sporten, it is crucial to inspire and activate as many people with a disability as possible to start playing sports. Data plays a central role in this: it enables us to make communication personal, relevant, and effective. Since part of our target group has an intellectual disability, having a clear UX is even more important. Simple is the hardest, but for us, it’s essential.
